Under One Sky’s Youth Advocacy Council presents a panel discussion about experiences of older youth living in foster care and fears and hopes about adoption. The Council consists of nine older youth from six counties who are either living in foster care, have been adopted out of foster care, or have permanent homes with guardians. Counties represented by youth include Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell , Gaston, Henderson , and McDowell.

The Council has presented at the past two statewide North Carolina Foster and Adoptive Parent Association conferences and three youth have just returned from Washington , DC where they spoke to a national audience of human service organizations at the Administration for Children and Families 2008 Children’s Bureau Conference. The goal of the Youth Advocacy Council is to educate other youth, parents, professionals, and the general public about issues affecting foster care and adoption.

Under One Sky is an Asheville-based, non-profit organization that helps youth in foster care find permanency and provides mentoring for a successful transition into adulthood.
